Summer is right around the corner, and we at Sig Cox Augusta Heating and Air Conditioning know as well as anyone what that the Augusta HVAC units can only bear so much in the sweltering hot summers. The summer months can be an incredibly tough time for your home comfort system, and it’s critical to be thinking about the health of your air conditioner before temperatures reach triple digits. We are going to discuss a few things you can do to help your AC operate at peak efficiency this summer.

Check Your Filter

When performing any home troubleshooting or maintenance on your HVAC system, the first thing you should look at is the filter. Depending on your system, you may have a permanent or disposable filter. Depending on which one your system uses, clean it or replace once a month.

Having a new or cleaned air filter ensures that no dirt or dust is blocking the cool air from circulating through your home, and will help prevent many potential problems that can result from the extra workload your unit will be taking on for the summer.

Clear the Area Around Your Outdoor Unit

Go outside and look at your HVAC unit. Make sure that the area is clear of anything that could obstruct your system, such as leaves, branches, and bushes. Anything near your unit could potentially fall into it and prevent it from operating smoothly.

Check Your Thermostat

Make sure that your thermostat is working properly. If you don’t have one already, consider installing a programmable thermostat. This feature allows you to program a schedule for your air conditioner, allowing your home to run a little warmer at times when you won’t be there.

This helps prevent your AC from working too hard in the hottest months, as well as keeping your energy bills low.

Clean Your Vents

For your HVAC to operate at peak efficiency, the vents need to be free of obstructions blocking the flow of air inside your home. Examine each of the vents in your home and make sure they are free of any visible blockages. Give them a thorough cleaning and make sure they are set to open. This will help your system get an even amount of cool air distributed throughout your home.

Consider Upgrading Your Unit

If your unit is over 10 years old, or still fails to cool your home properly after taking these measures, it may be time to invest in a new system. New systems are more efficient than ever before and you will likely recover the cost in energy savings alone over the coming years. In addition to monthly savings, you will enjoy a stress-free summer knowing that your HVAC is capable of handling whatever the season throws at it.
